Welcome to the Haunted Farrar School in Maxwell, Iowa!

We have the keys to this very haunted school! It has been featured on "Ghost Stalkers" and also "My Ghost Story"

This is a sleepover event!

Known as the most haunted schoolhouse in Iowa, the Farrar Schoolhouse is a terrifying and fascinating location that has attracted the attention of paranormal gurus from around the world.  As featured on Bio’s My Ghost Story and Destination America’s Ghoststalkers, the spirits that linger in these hallowed hallways are ready to school you in the world of paranormal!

Built in 1922, the Farrar Schoolhouse served the youth of the community for 80 years before closing its doors in 2002.  Although there are many who reminisce of their schooldays in the 17,000 square foot building, not all the stories are quite so golden.  In its early years there were reports of abuse, misconduct and other malicious acts towards students.  There is also a report of the Ku Klux Klan burning a cross on the lawn.  These deviant acts have left a dark impression on the spirits of the Farrar Schoolhouse that can be felt the instant that you walk onto the property.

Stories of being choked, pushed and shoved are not just some school bully pushing around investigators.  Are the spirits angry about the way they were treated in life or is there something more sinister at play?

The second floor of the Farrar Schoolhouse seems to have escaped this darkness.  Apparitions of a little girl have been seen and captured on film.  Investigators describe the area as feeling “light and playful” and have heard giggling.  Is this where the happy school children make their studies in the afterlife?  Maybe you’ll have a chance to play hide-and-seek with one of the spirits.  Other sightings include a little boy seen on the stairwell heading off to gym class.

Not all the spirits at Farrar Schoolhouse may have a connection to the old building.  Across the road is a 150-year-old cemetery.  Maybe a few restless souls have wandered over to check out the goings on in the classroom!

Disembodied voices, slamming doors, full-bodied apparitions roaming the halls, desks moving, shadow figures, orbs, light bulbs exploding, lights turning on and off of their own volition, sounds of cheering, running, laughter and chilling EVPs (electronic voice phenomena)—the Farrar Schoolhouse is an exhilarating location and class is definitely still in session!

If you do dare to attend school at the Farrar Schoolhouse, be wary of the third floor.  The spirits there have been known to choke people and they always seem to leave a mark!

Most children dream of the day they will be out of school and most adults still have nightmares about being back in school.  But what if you were doomed to roam the hallways and corridors for all eternity?  The Farrar Schoolhouse in Iowa is home to several of these unfortunate souls.

In 1919, the community of Farrar recognized that the rural one room schoolhouses were no longer efficient to meet the needs of the youth in the area.  A local farmer, C.G. Geddes, gave six acres of his land to use for the new Farrar Schoolhouse that would educate kindergarten through twelfth grades.

On April Fools’ Day of 1922, the schoolhouse celebrated its commencement with an auditorium filled with members of the community.  An orchestra played in honor of the 17,000 square foot schoolhouse that would benefit the minds of the local children for the next 80 years.  Although many recognized the educational need, a few people found it rather ostentatious saying it was “a monument to the arrogance and vanity of the schoolboard,” due to the inclusion of a boiler heater, electric lights and indoor bathroom facilities.

Even with the occasional naysayer, the first graduating class marched to pomp and circumstance in 1923 with five members.  The school thrived until 2002 and in May of that year, another banquet was held that reflected the memory of its opening before classes were dismissed forever.  Or were they?

In 2006, Jim and Nancy Oliver purchased the Farrar Schoolhouse and it didn’t take them long to discover that a few pupils had decided to hang around.  It is not uncommon to hear disembodied voices or catch a glimpse of a shadow skirting around a corner.  Nancy tells a story of how she lost her balance walking down the stairs when a firm hand on her shoulder helped her to maintain her balance.  When she turned to thank her husband…no one was there!  Some of their experiences seem to be residual such as the appearance of a little boy about 3’6” tall.  He appeared as if frozen in time with one foot on each step and holding the handrail down to the gymnasium.  For almost two seconds the outline was distinct before fading away.

The cause of the hauntings can be as simple as the delightful children who have been encountered on the second floor coming back to their happy memories of their schooldays or maybe even attributed to the Farrar Cemetery located directly across the road.  The spirits certainly did not wait until the doors were closed to begin attending classes.  Tales spun by previous students, faculty and staff account for strange occurrences even when class was in session.  Slamming doors, whispering voices and apparitions in the hallway have all been reported even before the vacancy began.

Not all of the history is wrapped in educational matriculation.  There are rumors of abuse, misconduct and other malicious acts during the early years of operation.  There is even a story of the Ku Klux Klan burning a cross on the property.  Perhaps these negative experiences are what has left the dark imprint on the schoolhouse.  People have been attacked and report an eerie feeling of something glaring out of the shadows when they enter the building.

The only way to get to the bottom of what is going on is to strap on your backpack and get ready to study.  You won’t want to miss out on the opportunity to attend class with the spirits of the Farrar Schoolhouse!
